A new name has joined the brands at Design Avenue: Yukari Ceramics, handmade Japanese architectural ceramics.

What the name means

In Japanese, Yukari (縁) describes a connection that crosses time and distance, drawing together people, places and stories. The brand says of itself that it is the first to bring traditional Japanese architectural ceramics to the world and reinterpret them through a contemporary lens.

Tajimi

The ceramics are made in Tajimi, in Gifu Prefecture, where clay, water and fire have sustained one of Japan's most important craft traditions for centuries. The brand draws on the Mino-yaki tradition and the Mingei philosophy.

In Italy, that knowledge meets a vision aimed at contemporary architecture. In the brand's own words, neither culture prevails over the other — both are changed by the encounter.

How it is made

The clay is shaped by hand, dried naturally, hand glazed, and then given over to slow firings that can last up to 48 hours.

As the brand puts it: time is not a measure of production but its essential ingredient.

The collections

Yukari has twenty-four collections, each with a Japanese name — among them Tsuya, Uta, Ami, Hamon, Kabe, Arashi and Umibe. The formats range from narrow ceramic strips to mosaic, and the surfaces from gloss and matt to textured and unglazed.
